About

MILSET Europe is a European non-governmental, non-profit, and politically independent youth organisation formed by member organisations of MILSET (International Movement for Leisure Activities in Science & Technology) based in Europe. These organisations are dedicated to education and focus on the organisation of science and technology activities for young people across the region. MILSET was founded in 1987 in Quebec during the first Expo-Sciences International. As the movement has grown steadily over the years, several regional branches have been established to strengthen its global presence and regional coordination

Joining MILSET means adhering to its Charter and becoming part of an international movement that contributes to the local development of scientific and technical education through leisure-time activities. MILSET promotes international cooperation, citizenship, and peace by encouraging the practice of science and technology in a spirit of respect, understanding, and solidarity among diverse geographic and cultural communities.
Through MILSET, tens of thousands of young people have had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, present and enhance their projects, and engage in dialogue with researchers, educators, youth leaders, and industry professionals. Participants have collaborated on projects, discovered new languages and cultures, and developed skills to adopt and apply emerging technologies.

  • 🤝 to support European and international cooperation between regional and national associations, particularly in the form of exchanges of young people between MILSET Europe member and partner organisations;
  • 🔬 to encourage cooperation amongst young scientists on a European level, promoting the idea of a United Europe;
  • 🎓 to aid member organisations through the development and organisation of international seminars, training and conferences and by representing them on supranational and international bodies such as the European Commission;
  • 🧪 to stimulate the development and organise scientific and technical educational activities for young people and children such as Science Fairs, international meetings, youth congresses, summer camps, conferences, study trips, training courses and all activities helping to promote exchanges among youth of all countries, including young scientists;
  • 🚀 to motivate young people to get interested in science, and to help educators working in this field worldwide;
  • 🌍 to cooperate at global level within MILSET with organisations sharing the same objectives.

MILSET EUROPE

Programmes

Key programmes and initiatives coordinated by MILSET Europe to promote youth engagement in science, technology and innovation across Europe.

The MILSET Expo-Sciences Europe (ESE) aim is promoting scientific projects created by children and young people around the world through an exhibition in a multi-cultural environment, also allowing the participation of institutions which want to assist young people in their projects.

The programme of the ESE consists of a variety of activities: the exhibition of projects, cultural and scientific visits, leisure activities, workshops, animation and conferences.

Participation at ESE is an opportunity to
  • Install and animate a space to highlight youngsters’, teachers’ and leaders’ efforts and interest in research, science and technology innovation, enhancing their motivation while contributing to their personal development.
  • Establish relationships with other institutions with similar goals through the development of scientific, technical and social projects in order to exchange ideas and create actions according to the needs of today’s world, for the benefit of industry, the educational sector and society at large.
  • Be represented at an international level through the young peoples’ projects, allowing for the spreading of knowledge amongst the main target audience (i.e. young people).
  • Promote Scientific Culture in a multi-cultural environment, allowing the sharing of experience and good practice as well as to achieve higher-standard scientific activities.

During one day, youngsters develop activities around an topic which includes different dimensions such as youth, science & technology, creativity, discovery and education.

Some experiments, scientific cards, quizz, ideas, etc. are designed and provided online having everybody invited to contribute to it.

The participants are invited to take photos and videos of the event and share them through the ESDY website.The last Thursday of April, the topic activities are organized all over Europe in schools, youth clubs, etc.

Objectives
  • Show that science is fun
  • Serve as an example of youth’s interest in science and research
  • Stimulate youth’s decision capabilities and creativity
  • Promote youth and interschool cooperation
  • Enforce a European identity among young people

A Young Torches for Science activity.

ISSC bring together a group of young people -usually about 60- for a week to learn and discover science around a topic. This also allows the participants to learn about different cultures and ideas and doing science linking theory with a practical approach.

MILSET Europe is working with a national organiser to have ISSC held every year in a new country.

Objectives
  • Expose and learn new ideas in different fields of science.
  • Share an incredible adventure with youngsters from all over Europe
  • Discover new cities, countries and cultures
  • Interested to host ISSC? Take a look at the calls.

A Young Torches for Science group of activities.

Youth Congresses bring together a large group of young people for a few days to develop and exchange on a particular topic during workshops, lectures debates, visits, etc.. They are often connected with an international event giving a place for the voice of youth.

Objectives
  • Give the possibility to youngsters to exchange ideas
  • Offer a youth message for international events
  • Develop youth involvement and opinion
  • Discover different cities, countries & cultures

A Youth Science Factory programme.

Science Youth Vectors programme aims to establish close partnership based relations between different organisations involved in youth science and technology activity and to stimulate collaboration between them in different fields and on different projects. It is a platform, where any organisation affiliated to MILSET could propose the idea of a new interesting project and look for partner organisations in other countries.

Science Youth Vectors programme includes projects as short-term bilateral events where children from two different countries meet together to complete a project in a certain field of science. Such a form of cooperative activity is most useful for developing the children intellectual, emotional and moral potential and one of the best ways to attract them to science and technology.

Main steps of a project
  1. Filling in the project form on the MILSET website
  2. Searching for a partner
  3. Looking for funds
  4. Designing a joint programme
  5. Working at the project
  6. Running the project
  7. Presenting the results

The „Technisch-Ökoligisches Projektzentrum Rabutz“ (Technical and Environmental Project Center) in the near of Leipzig in Saxony is a youth organisation with a wide range of non-formal education since 1996. It’s a place for children and young people to create their own scientific projects and to gain experience in technical processes.

On 4th May 2010, it has officially been named by MILET Europe as the "European Youth Competence Center for Renewable Energies" aiming at acting as a booster for the development of activities on renewable energies for the whole Europe.

…today you can find:
  • a „Young Enterprise company” organizing the racing team - also responsible for engineering, funding, cooperation with commercial partners, coordinate international projects and public relation
  • a youth centre with non-formal educational standards. Among engineering, mathematics and physics the focus regarding the workgroups lies on the environment and renewable energies. Learning-by-doing as an educational strategy
  • a race track, whose infrastructure base exclusively on renewable energy (photovoltaic and wind energy)
  • a place for practical training, seminars, bi-, tri- and multilateral youth exchanges
Principles
  • Learning is fun – children and young people are more motivated to acquire knowledge
  • project-oriented leisure education, promoting initiative and personal responsibility of children and young people
  • Using of synergy effects through cooperation with business, industry and communities
  • impart knowledge about the requirements of the fast-moving developments in science, technology and economy to future students and apprentices in addition to the school.
