Taking a microscope, and shooting a picture is an easy task. When taking a picture, there are many pictures to discover all around!
MILSET invites you to explore, from a zoom to a snapshot, from your kitchen to your classroom, by discovering the microscopic everywhere, you are living the world. MICROSCOPES starts to grow your curiosity and to know more in a wonderful!
The MILSET STEAM Photo Contest (SPC) aims at creating a lovely way for youth to creatively express what they observe with science in pictures.
Engage youth in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) by:
- Capturing a visual aspect of STEAM through art and science of photography
- Capturing a delicate, but time-sensitive and fast evolving, STEAM concept and phenomenon
- Highlighting STEAM in their lives in their own personal way of discovery
To add a maximum of STEAM pictures through the internet all over the world for fun, and for MILSET and its member organizations.
- The MILSET STEAM Photo Contest is ready to receive your photos and the theme is applied to all MILSET concepts: from the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Earth and applied sciences, Space sciences, etc.
- SPC can include macro, micro, nature, physics, and more.
- Open to youth aged 13 to 25 years old as of September 1st, 2026.
- MILSET staff, judges, and their immediate families are not eligible.

SPC Information
- The MILSET STEAM Photo Contest is ready to receive your photos and the theme is applied to all MILSET concepts: from the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Earth and applied sciences, Space sciences, etc.
- SPC can include macro, micro, nature, physics, and more.
- Youth between the age of 10 and 25 are eligible.
- MILSET global and regional members, non-members youth and their immediate family members can submit photos.
- Maximum 3 photos per participant.
- Each submission must include a completed online registration form.
- Photos must clearly communicate a STEAM concept or phenomenon.
- Each photo must include a brief explanation in English without the use of AI.
- Photos must be the original work of the participant.
- Photos must not include human faces.
- Photos must be captured using a camera (digital or mobile).
- Basic editing (cropping, exposure, color correction) is allowed.
- No watermarks or text on images.
Each submission must include:
- Full name (Name & Surname)
- Date of birth
- City and country
- Email address
- Topic category related to the photo: Health Sciences, Pure & Applied Sciences, Nature (Environment and Ecosystems), Engineering, Computer & Robotics Applications, Space Sciences
- Photo title in English (max. 60 characters)
- Description (max. 300 characters, in plain English for a general audience). The text must be written entirely by the participant in their own words. Any AI-generated or AI-assisted description will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the contest.
- Colour or Grayscale
- Minimum size: at least 2500 pixels wide
- Maximum file size: 10MB
- .jpeg, .png, .pdf, or .tif format
The submitted photos will be evaluated anonymously by a jury comprised of at least five (5) persons recognised for their competence in the fields of photography, STEAM education, or scientific communication, to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
If the number of entries is significant, MILSET may conduct a pre-judging screening.
Entries will be judged on:
- Originality: creativity of the photo and/or photographic technique
- Informational content: effectiveness at communicating the phenomenon or concept
- Technical proficiency: focus, composition, depth of field, and photo processing
- Artistic and visual impact: aesthetic quality, visual and emotional appeal
Up to three photographs per participant will be evaluated by the jury and considered for awards.
The jury will award First, Second, and Third Place, while a People’s Choice Award will be given to the photo with the highest engagement on MILSET social media.
Selected participants will be notified by email.
The top 15 highest-scoring photographs (including the winners) will be:
- Displayed in the MILSET SPC Virtual Gallery on the MILSET website
- Considered for publication in the MILSET Journal of Science Engagement (JOSE)
- Promoted through the MILSET Expo-Sciences International (ESI) programme
- If your entry is selected as a winning photo, you give MILSET non-exclusive, worldwide rights to use your name and photo(s) for SPC-related communications and publications.
- This is royalty-free and you warrant that you hold the rights to grant MILSET permission and agree to hold MILSET harmless in any disputes that arise out of photo ownership rights.
- Photo copyright has to be the property of the contestant; even family members have to give permission in case of photos taken by them.
- MILSET agrees to identify the photo’s author in its publications.
By submitting a photo to the MILSET STEAM Photo Contest, contestants agree to abide by the competition’s official rules and acknowledge that all decisions and management operations taken by the organizers, including eligibility, are final and cannot be appealed.

Call for Jury
MILSET invites passionate educators, photographers, scientists, and STEAM professionals to join the international Jury of the STEAM Photo Contest. Together, we aim to recognize and celebrate the creativity, curiosity, and scientific spirit of young people from around the world who express their ideas through photography.
By participating in the jury, you will help highlight outstanding youth submissions that combine artistic expression, scientific thinking, and strong photographic technique.
