Science Belongs to Everyone: Celebrating the International Day of Scientific Culture

What if scientific culture became part of everyday life for all?

On 28 September, the International Day of Scientific Culture (IDSC) invites us to celebrate something central to MILSET’s mission: bringing science closer to people and inspiring communities to engage with it.

Scientific culture is not only about understanding concepts. It is about asking questions, exploring ideas, thinking critically, and using knowledge to make informed decisions. In a world facing complex challenges—from climate change and energy demands to sustainability—an engaged and scientifically informed society is more important than ever.

Through MILSET events, young people worldwide present innovative science projects that spark curiosity, share knowledge, and contribute to building a society that is better informed and more prepared to face the future. Their creativity and commitment embody the very essence of scientific culture.

The IDSC was launched in 2020 by organisations dedicated to strengthening the public communication of science, with MILSET proudly among its founding institutions. The date, 28 September, commemorates the first broadcast of Cosmos, one of the most influential science outreach programmes in history.

Today, the initiative continues to remind us that science should not remain within laboratories or classrooms. Science belongs to our communities, our decisions, and our shared future.
