Nigeria’s Science Festival – Creativity Driving Change

The last edition of the National Festival for School Science (Stemite‑NAFESS), held in Lagos, concluded with outcomes that highlight its growing role in advancing science, technology, engineering, and innovation across Nigeria’s schools.

Following rigorous state‑level selections and expert evaluations, the grand finale brought together the nation’s most promising student projects. The top three winners reflected both creativity and social relevance: reusable sanitary pads made from banana trunks, a wearable pulse‑based music recommendation system for stress management in athletes, and eco‑thread technology transforming plastic waste into laundry ropes and baskets.

These projects demonstrate how young minds are addressing pressing issues—from sustainability and waste management to health and wellbeing. Beyond the competition, the festival provided a platform for cultural exchange, collaboration, and the celebration of creativity.

Despite economic challenges and limited sponsorship, the organisers ensured participation remained accessible by covering registration costs, offering transport subsidies, and introducing competitive grants. This commitment underscores the festival’s mission: to nurture innovation regardless of financial background.

The impact extended beyond awards. Finalists gained exposure to prestigious international events, ensuring Nigerian students could share their ideas and solutions on a global stage.
