More Than a Science Fair: The People Behind CWSF 2026

Long after the awards have been presented and the exhibition halls have fallen silent, what many participants remember most about a science fair are not the medals—they are the people.

Throughout the Canada-Wide Science Fair 2026, Edmonton became a meeting place where hundreds of young people from different provinces, cultures, and backgrounds discovered that science is also about building relationships, understanding perspectives, and growing together.

Beyond the judging sessions, participants shared meals, explored the host city, attended ceremonies, joined interactive activities, and experienced Canadian culture alongside fellow students who, despite living thousands of kilometres apart, shared the same passion for discovery. These informal moments proved just as meaningful as the scientific programme itself.

Many finalists arrived knowing no one outside their own delegation. By the end of the week, they had formed friendships that crossed provincial, linguistic, and cultural boundaries. Conversations that began beside a project display often continued throughout the day, creating connections that may last well beyond the event.

Science fairs create a unique environment where collaboration naturally replaces isolation. Students who may be the only young researcher in their school suddenly find themselves surrounded by hundreds of peers who understand their interests, ambitions, and curiosity. This sense of belonging is one of the greatest strengths of youth science events.

Edmonton itself also became part of the learning experience. Beyond the exhibition venue, participants discovered local traditions, hospitality, public spaces, museums, and cultural activities that allowed them to better understand the region while sharing their own experiences with others. Every host city leaves its own mark, turning each edition into a cultural journey as well as an academic one.

This philosophy closely reflects the vision promoted by MILSET North America (MILSET NORAM), where member organisations recognise that international scientific events are opportunities to educate not only future researchers, but also future global citizens. Learning to communicate across cultures, respecting different perspectives, and working collaboratively are skills just as vital as scientific knowledge itself.

Perhaps this is why many participants describe science fairs as life-changing experiences. They return home not only with new ideas and scientific inspiration, but with greater confidence, broader perspectives, unforgettable memories, and friendships that often endure for years.

The true legacy of events like CWSF cannot be measured solely through projects or awards. It lives in every young person who returns home believing more deeply in their own potential and in the power of science to connect people across communities, cultures, and borders.
